The wheels of a mountain bike are a crucial element for performance and safety when practicing mountain biking.

They can have three different diameters: 26 inches, 27.5 inches or 29 inches, and can be equipped with tires or be tubeless. The braking system can be disc or rim pad, offering a wide variety of choices to suit every rider's needs.

Features of MTB wheels:

Three different diameters: 26 inches, 27.5 inches or 29 inches for adult mountain bikes:

The diameter of a mountain bike wheel is determined by the size of the cyclist, indeed a user whose height is greater than 1m85 will have 29 inch mountain bike wheels, for a person of intermediate height 1m70 to 1m85, 27.5 inch mountain bike wheels will be more suitable, finally for practitioners from 1m55 to 1m70 26 inch mountain bike wheels will be more appropriate. Choosing the right diameter will allow you to obtain the best compromise between stability, comfort and responsiveness from your mountain bike. The oldest standard corresponds to 26 inch mtb wheels. The junior bikes (1m40 to 1m55) are equipped with 24 inch mountain bike wheels.

An electric mountain bike wheel may contain a motor in its hub to provide pedal assistance.

Tires or tubeless?

A clincher mountain bike wheel will have an inner tube between the tire and the rim, this type of assembly is easily repairable and generally used on low or mid-range bicycle models.

Competition or top-of-the-range mountain bikes are generally equipped with tubeless mountain bike wheels which can be of two types: tubeless ready, in which a specific rim tape is used at the bottom of the rim to ensure the tightness of the spoke heads, in this fitting a puncture sealant is applied to the inside of the tyre. The latest generation tubeless uses specific completely closed rims, sealing is ensured by the pressure of the sidewalls of the tire in the rim.

Tubeless allows you to ride at low air pressures to increase the tire's grip with the ground.

Disc or rim brake system?

26 v brake mtb wheels will be made up of rims fitted with braking strips for a brake system with pads such as v brakes.

The more demanding the level of practice, the more the braking system will be stressed; enduro or downhill mountain bike wheels will be equipped with discs for progressive and efficient braking in all weather conditions, moreover disc brakes are not sensitive to rim runout which can occur when they are impacted.

Rim pad braking can be v brake or cantilever type, disc brakes can be mechanical (cable operated) or hydraulic. A pad brake wears the rim with which it works, it is lighter than a disc model but less efficient in intensive use.

Some handcrafted mtb wheels, therefore assembled by hand, can be adapted to both types of braking, in fact, they can have rims fitted with braking strips and hubs designed for fixing brake discs.

29 carbon mtb wheels will be made of carbon rims. This material is not used with brake pads for use on mountain bikes because impurities such as sand, gravel, etc. can be trapped between the rubber pads and the rim braking strips, in which case the rims wear out very quickly. Nevertheless, a carbon baton mtb wheel will be made of aluminum braking strips for braking with pads.

Lightweight materials for better performance:

The mtb bike rim can be aluminum or carbon. A carbon mtb wheelset will be lighter and more rigid, it will have better performance than an aluminum model but it will be more sensitive to shocks and direct impacts. The price of a carbon mtb wheel is higher than a classic model but it will be more suitable for competitive or intensive use.

Choice of a mountain bike wheel according to its practice:

An enduro mountain bike wheel will have a wider rim than a cross country mountain bike wheel for better resistance to the shocks and jumps that are part of this practice.

MTB wheel performance:

MTB wheels offer a wide variety of choices to meet every rider's needs:

A homemade mtb wheel can be personalized according to the weight of the cyclist and its use, in fact, the tension value of the spokes will be adjusted, the mtb freewheel to be 9, 10, 11 or 12 speeds, the diameter of the rim chosen to obtain a 26 inch mtb wheel, a 27.5 inch mtb wheel or a 29 inch mtb wheel.

Lightweight materials improve bike performance and handling:

A 29 carbon mtb wheel will be stiffer and lighter than an aluminum model, performance will be improved and steering precision improved.

- Tires or tubeless offer better grip and increased resistance to punctures

- Disc or rim pad braking system provides better stopping power and modulation.

The major brands specializing in the design and manufacture of mountain bike wheels:

Mavic mountain bike wheels are very popular with the most demanding cyclists, indeed this manufacturer offers a large number of models for use in sport touring and competition, they are essentially made up of lightweight and high-performance aluminum rims with specific spokes. The mtb dt swiss wheels have a more traditional design with the use of round spokes but the range of wheels with carbon rims is wider.
