1. Why repair rather than throw away

Repairing a punctured inner tube has two clear benefits. Economically first: a patch costs just a few pence, compared to several pounds for a new inner tube. Environmentally too: repairing rather than replacing reduces waste and extends the life of your equipment.

Contrary to popular belief, a properly repaired inner tube is just as reliable as a new one in the vast majority of cases, provided you follow a few simple steps.

2. The tools you'll need to repair an inner tube

  • A puncture repair kit: glue and patches, or self-adhesive patches
  • The sandpaper or scraper usually included in the kit
  • A bucket of water or a basin, optional but handy for locating a hidden leak at home

3. Locating the puncture

Inflate the punctured inner tube slightly to amplify the air leak. Then hold it close to your ear to pick up the hiss, or dunk it in water: the bubbles that escape will show you exactly where the hole is.

Once you've located the leak, mark its position with a marker pen or a piece of chalk before fully deflating the inner tube — this stops you losing track of the spot once the air is gone.

The cold patch is by far the most common: glue and patch, air-dried, a quick fix suited to both roadside repairs and workshop use. The hot patch, rarer these days, uses a heat-based process for stronger adhesion. It remains more common in professional workshops than for a roadside fix, given the specific equipment it requires.
