Should you go for a used road bike hub, or is it better to pay full price for a new one? At SL Sport equipments, every used hub goes through a systematic inspection before it's listed for sale. Here's how we do it.

1. Why buy a used road bike hub?
Buying used offers several concrete advantages for any cyclist, beginner or experienced:
- A reduced budget: an inspected used hub typically costs 30 to 60% less than an equivalent new model.
- Access to references you can no longer find new: vintage Campagnolo, classic Mavic or older Shimano models remain perfectly functional once inspected.
- A more responsible approach: reusing a hub that's still in good working order reduces the environmental footprint of your equipment.
2. What are the risks of a poorly inspected used hub?
Used parts get a bad reputation when bought without any warranty or inspection, for example between private individuals. The main risks are:
- Worn bearings, invisible to the naked eye but responsible for excessive play or resistance to rotation
- A seized freehub body or worn ratchet teeth, which compromises power transfer
- Damaged axle threads, making assembly difficult or impossible
- No warranty whatsoever if a defect is discovered after purchase
Note: these risks mainly apply to uninspected used parts bought between private individuals. This is exactly why we've put a systematic inspection process in place before every sale.
3. Our grading scale: how we assess every used hub
Every used hub sold by SL Sport equipments is inspected and rated on a scale of 1 to 10, reflecting its actual condition:
- 6: less than 25% wear — functional part with visible signs of use
- 9: new without packaging — never mounted, without its original packaging
- 10: new with packaging — never mounted, in its original packaging
This rating is never self-declared: our team carries out the inspection before the item is listed, not the buyer. In practice, every hub is checked on several points before being listed:
- Bearing play and smoothness check
- Inspection of the freehub body and ratchet mechanism
- Inspection of axle threads for corrosion
- A condition rating assigned according to the scale above, shown on each product page
Good to know: you don't need to carry out any inspection yourself on delivery. The inspection work has already been done upstream, and the condition shown on the product page matches the actual state of the part.
4. New, used or refurbished: how to choose?
| Criterion | New | Inspected used |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Full price | 30 to 60% cheaper |
| Availability | Limited to current references | Access to older or discontinued models |
| Reliability | Manufacturer warranty | Reliable if inspected before sale (grading scale) |
| Estimated lifespan | Maximum from purchase | Depends on rated condition (6 to 10/10) |
In short: if you're after a recent part under manufacturer warranty, new remains the simplest option. If you're looking to stretch your budget or find an older reference, inspected used is a reliable alternative.
