On modern road bikes, the front derailleur is mainly found in two configurations:
- Double chainring: the most common setup (compact 34/50, semi-compact 36/52, standard 39/53)

Unlike the rear derailleur, the front derailleur operates with only two or three positions and is shifted relatively infrequently during a ride. If the problem occurs only when shifting between chainrings (chain rub, missed shifts, chain dropping toward the frame or crankset), the front derailleur is the likely cause. If the issue appears when shifting between cassette sprockets (slow shifts, continuous noise, or the chain skipping several gears at once), the rear derailleur is most likely responsible.

5. Compatibility and choosing the right derailleur for your groupset
Regardless of which derailleur is involved, the compatibility rule remains the same: the front derailleur, rear derailleur, and shifters must belong to the same brand and have the same number of speeds. A Shimano 11-speed derailleur will not work correctly with SRAM shifters, and the opposite is also true.
Shimano

SRAM
