Unlike the majority of road bike chains, which are symmetrical and can be installed in either direction, some recent high-end chains — notably SRAM Flattop and the latest generations of Shimano 12-speed chains — have a specific installation orientation that must be respected. Installing them incorrectly will not cause immediate damage, but it can affect shifting precision and chain durability.

1. What is a directional chain?
A standard symmetrical chain can be installed in either direction: its outer plates are identical on both sides. This is the case for the vast majority of road bike chains, including most SRAM PC-Series, Campagnolo and KMC models.
A so-called "directional" or "oriented" chain, on the other hand, features an asymmetrical plate profile or a specific marking designed to be positioned on a particular side of the drivetrain (generally the visible side, on the outside of the frame). This design choice is intended to optimize shifting precision on the latest-generation derailleurs, particularly high-end electronic shifting systems.

Shimano 12-speed (Dura-Ace/Ultegra R9200, R8100)
Recent Shimano 12-speed chains follow the same orientation principle, with the marked side positioned facing outward from the frame for optimal shifting performance.
Chains not affected
The vast majority of road bike chains currently in use remain symmetrical and do not require any particular orientation check. If in doubt, refer to the instructions supplied with your chain: this is the most reliable source for confirming whether your specific model requires a particular installation direction.
3. How to identify the correct installation orientation
On affected chains, a visual reference is generally present on the outer plate: lettering, a logo, or a model marking that should consistently face outward from the frame (the side visible from outside the bike, away from the frame).
Tip: before removing the chain, take a photo of it while it is still installed, with a reference point (such as the quick link) clearly visible. This will allow you to reproduce exactly the same orientation when reinstalling it, without relying solely on your memory.
4. Step-by-step installation method
1. Identify the correct orientation before starting
On a new chain, check the instructions or packaging: the installation direction is generally stated explicitly for the affected models.
2. Position the chain on the drivetrain
Route the chain around the chainring, derailleur and cassette while maintaining the identified orientation, before closing the quick link.
3. Removing and reinstalling the chain during maintenance
If you temporarily remove the chain for cleaning or repair, keep a visual record of its original orientation (a photo, or by leaving the quick link on the visible side) before reinstalling it.
5. What happens if the chain is installed backwards?
Keep it in perspective: installing a directional chain backwards does not cause immediate breakage or create any particular safety risk. The chain will still work, but shifting precision may be slightly reduced and wear may be marginally faster over the long term, as the chain is no longer being used in the configuration for which it was optimized.

Correcting an installation error means reopening the quick link and reversing the chain. However, most manufacturers advise against reusing a quick link that has already been opened (PowerLock, Quick-Link): plan to use a new quick link for the reinstallation.
