You’ve just fitted a new chain, or you’re about to do so, and you’re wondering whether your current cassette will hold up. The honest answer is neither always yes nor always no: it mainly depends on how well your old chain was maintained before it was replaced.

1. The principle: the chain and cassette wear together, but not at the same rate

As a chain gradually stretches, it progressively changes the shape of the cassette teeth it runs over. This process is cumulative and almost invisible in everyday use, until the day a new chain no longer "fits" properly onto teeth that have already been shaped by the old, worn chain. This mismatch is what causes the chain to skip, even though it is brand new.

However, the cassette does not necessarily need to be replaced every time the chain is replaced: if the old chain was replaced in time, before it became excessively worn, the cassette can easily handle several successive chains without suffering significant damage.

2. The decisive test: the "new chain test"

This is the most reliable and simplest method: fit the new chain onto the old cassette without changing anything else, then test the drivetrain across all the sprockets, including under load (riding out of the saddle or accelerating).

How to interpret the result:

No chain skipping, smooth shifting: the cassette is still in good condition, and no replacement is needed for the time being.

Chain skipping on one or two specific sprockets, especially under load: the cassette is worn at those specific points, and replacement is necessary.

3. The factors that influence the answer

When the previous chain was replaced: a chain replaced early (around 0.5–0.75% elongation, see our guide to chain wear checkers) causes little damage to the cassette. A chain left in service until 1% or more elongation has generally already caused significant deformation of the teeth.

The number of chains already used on the cassette: a cassette that has already "absorbed" 2 or 3 chains that were worn to the limit is statistically more likely to require replacement than a cassette that is still relatively new.

The cassette material: aluminium or titanium cassettes, which are lighter but also softer, deform more quickly under the effect of a worn chain than conventional steel cassettes.

5. The cost of not replacing the cassette when you should

Fitting a new chain onto a worn cassette without carrying out the preliminary test can lead to a vicious cycle: the chain skipping continues despite the new chain, and the latter wears out faster than normal because it is constantly running over an already deformed tooth profile. In this situation, the result is often having to replace the cassette a few weeks later, on top of having prematurely worn out the new chain — ultimately making the total cost higher than replacing both components together from the outset.

6. How to optimize the chain/cassette replacement cycle to keep costs down

The most cost-effective strategy over the long term is not to let a single chain wear out completely, but to alternate 2 to 3 chains on the same cassette, systematically replacing them at around 0.5 to 0.75% elongation. This rotation limits the progressive deformation of the cassette teeth and, in many cases, allows the same cassette to be used with 2 to 3 chains before it eventually needs to be replaced as well.

7. FAQ — Replacing the cassette with the chain

Can you put an old chain back on a new cassette?
It is not recommended. A chain that has already been used, even moderately, no longer matches the profile of a new cassette exactly and will accelerate its wear from the very first miles. If you replace the cassette, you should replace the chain at the same time.
How many chains do you typically use before replacing a cassette?
If you consistently replace the chain early (at 0.5 to 0.75% elongation), it is common to use 2 to 3 chains on the same cassette before it shows signs of wear requiring replacement. This number drops significantly if the chains are replaced late.
Does a worn cassette also damage the chainring?
The chainring generally wears more slowly than the cassette because it undergoes fewer rotation cycles for a comparable amount of effort. However, a heavily worn chain can also accelerate chainring wear, particularly on the larger chainrings and gear ratios that are used frequently.
Is the new chain test 100% reliable?
