1. Why choosing the right lubricant makes a real difference
An insufficiently or improperly lubricated chain generates more internal friction between the rollers, pins, and plates — resulting in a direct loss of energy with every pedal stroke. Conversely, using too much lubricant attracts dust and grit, creating an abrasive paste that accelerates wear on the chain and cassette. The right product, applied correctly, reduces both friction and dirt buildup.

Wet lube
Formulated to resist being washed away by water, wet lube stays on the chain longer, including in rainy conditions. Its thicker consistency, however, attracts more dust in dry conditions, which means the drivetrain needs to be cleaned more frequently.
Dry lube
Dry lube penetrates the chain before leaving a dry-to-the-touch film that attracts virtually no dust. Ideal for regular use in dry weather, it is quickly washed away by rain and therefore requires more frequent reapplication.

4. How to properly lubricate your chain — step-by-step method
1. Preliminary cleaning
Run a dry cloth or a cloth lightly dampened with a mild degreaser along the chain to remove dust and residue from the previous lubricant before applying a new product.
2. Drop-by-drop application
Turn the pedals backwards and apply one drop of lubricant directly to each chain link, at the roller, working your way along the entire length of the chain.
3. Allow time for the lubricant to penetrate
Let the lubricant sit for a few minutes (5 to 10 minutes depending on the product) so that it can penetrate between the rollers and pins before wiping the chain.
4. Wipe off excess lubricant
Run a clean cloth over the entire chain to remove any excess product. This is an important step that should not be overlooked: excess lubricant on the surface provides no additional protection and simply attracts dust.
Tip: a properly lubricated chain should not leave a visible greasy residue on your fingers after wiping. If it does, remove the excess with another pass of a clean cloth.
5. Mistakes and unsuitable products to avoid
Olive oil, cooking oil, engine oil: these are emergency solutions for occasional use, not bicycle chain lubricants. These oils contain none of the wear-reducing additives specifically designed for chains, oxidize quickly when exposed to air, and become sticky, which accelerates dirt buildup rather than preventing it. They can be used once in an emergency to finish a ride, but should be replaced with a proper bicycle lubricant as soon as possible.
Using WD-40 alone as a lubricant: WD-40 is primarily a penetrating and cleaning product, not a long-lasting lubricant. It is effective at displacing moisture and removing residue, but its protective film disappears very quickly. It can be used as a cleaning step before applying a proper lubricant, but never as a substitute for one.
Over-lubrication: applying too much product does not provide greater protection for the chain. It simply creates excess lubricant that attracts dust and forms an abrasive paste.
Under-lubrication: conversely, a dry, squeaking chain causes premature wear to the pins and rollers. The characteristic noise is a warning sign that can appear even before checking the chain for wear.
