1. The principle behind a universal chain
A "universal" chain such as a KMC is designed around the common dimensional standards for a given number of speeds (inner width, chain pitch, plate thickness), making it compatible with cassettes and derailleurs from multiple manufacturers—provided they use a standard, non-proprietary drivetrain geometry.
An important distinction: "Universal" does not mean compatible with everything. As explained in our dedicated guides, SRAM's AXS Flattop and Campagnolo's C-Link use proprietary chain geometries that are not compatible with third-party chains. KMC's scope is therefore limited to conventional drivetrains: all generations of Shimano, mechanical SRAM and first-generation eTap, and Campagnolo drivetrains up to and including 11-speed.

X11 Series — 11-Speed
The X11 covers the vast majority of the mechanical 11-speed market. It is KMC's best-selling model among cyclists looking for a dependable chain without paying premium-brand prices, particularly for training bikes or second bikes.
X12 Series — 12-Speed
The X12 follows the industry's move to 12-speed drivetrains, but only where manufacturers have left the platform open—namely Shimano's mechanical and electronic drivetrains using standard chain geometry. It is not intended as a replacement for SRAM Flattop or Campagnolo C-Link chains.
DLC / Ti-N Series — Premium surface treatments

4. Where KMC holds its own
KMC is an excellent choice in several real-world situations:
- Entry-level or mid-range road bikes equipped with conventional mechanical drivetrains (Shimano 105 and below, mechanical SRAM Rival, Campagnolo Centaur/Chorus 11-speed and earlier): in everyday riding, the difference in shifting precision compared with the original chain is barely noticeable.
- Tight budgets: because the chain is a regular wear item, reducing replacement costs without sacrificing basic reliability is a sensible compromise.
- Training or spare chain: for an indoor trainer, winter bike, or any high-mileage setup where durability matters more than outright performance, a KMC chain is perfectly suited to the job.
- Multi-brand maintenance: owning a chain compatible with several drivetrain standards is convenient for workshops or cyclists maintaining multiple bikes from different manufacturers.
5. Where KMC reaches its limits
Cases where KMC simply isn't an option: every SRAM AXS (Flattop) groupset and every Campagnolo 12-speed or Ekar groupset (C-Link) uses a closed proprietary chain design. No KMC chain—regardless of how "universal" it is—is designed to work with these drivetrains. In these cases, there is no real alternative: you must use the manufacturer's original chain.
On premium electronic drivetrains that remain open to third-party chains (particularly Shimano Di2), the difference in shifting precision between a KMC chain and Shimano's original chain is small but may become noticeable under heavy pedaling loads or in racing conditions. This is where drivetrain manufacturers optimize every component, with chains engineered to match their derailleurs to extremely tight tolerances.
