Changing the disc brake pads of your mountain bike or road bike equipped with disc brakes is a simple operation to perform regularly to maintain an acceptable level of safety.

Each brand has developped its own fixing system and its own assembly.

We will present in this article the most common models.

Changing the MTB brake pads:

Step 1:

remove the disc brake caliper

remove the lock washer and the axle

remove the brake pads and the spring

Step 4:

apply a degreaser to clean the caliper and push back the pistons, using a screwdriver

New disc brake pads assembly :


Step 5:

place new brake pads, a new spring, the axle and the lock washer

measure the thickness of the disc in order to check its conformity and check the tightening torque of its screws

replace and torque the brake caliper bolts
